Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who recently won gold in the women’s welterweight category at the Paris Olympics, officially filed a legal complaint over online harassment, according to her lawyer.

Khelif has been at the center of a contentious gender dispute, which has garnered significant media attention and sparked heated discussions across social media platforms.

Nabil Boudi, Khelif’s lawyer, confirmed through an X post that the complaint was submitted in response to the online abuse directed at Khelif.

The statement translates to, “After the time for sports, comes the time for justice. Fresh from winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, boxer Imane Khelif has decided to take on a new fight: that of justice, dignity, and honor.”

“Ms. Khelif contacted the firm, which yesterday filed a complaint for aggravated cyber harassment with the Paris prosecutor's office's online hate unit,” the statement continued. “The criminal investigation will determine who initiated this misogynistic, racist, and sexist campaign, but will also have to focus on those who fueled this digital lynching.”

Boudi concluded the statement by saying, “The unfair harassment suffered by the boxing champion will remain the biggest stain of these Olympic Games.”

Additionally, the boxer publicly expressed her frustration with the situation, describing the online commentary as "immoral" and stating her desire to shift global perceptions.

"All that is being said about me on social media is immoral. I want to change the minds of people around the world," Khelif told Reuters on Saturday.
